What is an ultrasound?

An ultrasound is nothing more than a set of sound waves inside the body. These waves are made with ultrasound. The waves hit the body and bounce off, through an ultrasound machine a kind of image is formed. The advantage is that it allows you to map your cat’s organs. So the total price depends on the kind of ultrasound required for your cat. The ultrasound is actually a very simple procedure, as it does not require your cat to go under anesthesia. This is the reason why the ultrasound is usually done very quickly, so you don’t have to take a day off for it. However, the ultrasound often has to be done in a veterinary clinic, although these are located in almost every city.

Cost of the ultrasound

If you have a pregnant cat, or if you suspect that your cat is pregnant, you can have an ultrasound done. It depends on the vet clinic what the price is, but usually an ultrasound for a pregnant cat is about €60. You can then use this ultrasound to see if the baby kittens are alive and if the hearts are filling with blood. However, you may also need to have an ultrasound of the abdomen. This may be due to the fact that there is an abnormality or there are problems with the organs. The abdominal ultrasound makes this very easy to spot. These costs are a lot higher though, for a belly ultrasound you normally pay €10. Then there is another type of ultrasound, this is the heart ultrasound. With a heart ultrasound, another image is formed. This procedure costs €105 on average, however this is only done on cats whose problems are expected to be so severe.

Why have an ultrasound?

So an ultrasound aims to allow you to examine your cat’s body without an internal examination. The advantage of this is that you obviously don’t need an operation, so you save a lot of money. The price of an ultrasound is not very high, so you don’t have to put down so much. So you can use the ultrasound to determine the pregnancy, but also to determine possible abnormalities. So it allows you to prevent rather than cure, so to speak. If you know that a cat in your home is going to have kittens then you can think about this, at least you won’t have any surprises.

Insuring my cat

Another option is to purchase cat insurance. The advantage of this is that certain insurances allow you to claim the ultrasounds in full. This is of course tremendous if you have a cat that will often have kittens. It depends a bit on the type of cat whether you need to have an ultrasound often, this is all on the Internet. Of course, you do pay a premium in the month, but if you often incur expenses you really do recoup. Want to get cheap cat insurance?
